ProposalLift vs UpCat

The short answer

Use UpCat if you want Upwork cover letters and job alerts, you want them free, and you do not need anything else. Use ProposalLift if the slow part of applying is no longer the writing but the deciding: which jobs are worth Connects, which version of you to present, and which past project to put in front of this client.

UpCat is the most direct free substitute for our two headline features, and we would rather say that plainly than bury it.

Where UpCat is the better choice

• You are price sensitive. It is free with no card. ProposalLift Pro is $15 a month. For a freelancer applying to a few jobs a week, that gap is real and the feature gap may not be.
• You want one thing installed. UpCat is a browser extension and nothing else. There is no second place to log in and no workspace to set up.
• You are starting out. If you have no portfolio to match and one way of describing yourself, most of what you would pay us for does not apply yet.
• You use a Chromium browser and like it that way. Chrome, Brave, Edge, and Opera are all supported.

Where ProposalLift is the better choice

• You want to apply to fewer, better jobs. AI Job Qualify grades each job against criteria you write and marks it qualified or disqualified, so Connects go to work you can actually win.
• You present yourself more than one way. Saved personas let a developer who also does consulting pitch each one properly, without rewriting the story every time.
• Your past work is your best argument. Your saved projects are ranked against each job by similarity, so the proof in a draft is chosen for you and fits the brief.
• You work with other people. The Agency plan shares personas, portfolio, templates, and a credit pool across a team. UpCat lists no team features.
• You want to own it. The open-source edition is AGPL-3.0 and runs on your own server with your own API keys.

A fair caveat

A free tool that does two thirds of what you need is a strong competitor, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. UpCat also shares our most important position: it tells you to read and edit the draft before submitting, and it does not bid on your behalf.

The case for paying us is not that our drafts are better sentence by sentence. It is that context is the expensive part of a good proposal, and ProposalLift stores yours so you stop re-supplying it. If you are not yet feeling that cost, you are not the customer for this.
