Upwork cover letters

Upwork cover letters: structure, openings, and length

On Upwork the cover letter is the body of your proposal, and it is the part a client reads before deciding whether to open your profile. A letter that gets read names the client's problem first, offers one piece of relevant proof, says briefly how you would approach the work, and ends with a question. Credentials, enthusiasm, and your life story belong later or nowhere.

The four moves a cover letter has to make

Order matters more than wording. Most rejected letters hold the right information in the wrong sequence, with the client's problem buried under the freelancer's background.

  1. Name the problem, not yourself

Open by restating what the client is trying to solve, in your words rather than theirs. It proves you read the brief, which is the first thing being tested.

  2. Offer one piece of proof

One past project that resembles this job, with the outcome. One. A list of five reads as a portfolio dump and none of them lands.

  3. Say how you would start

Two or three sentences on your approach, specific enough to show judgement. This is what separates you from everyone who only asserted that they can do it.

  4. End with a real question

Ask the one thing you genuinely need to know to scope the work. It invites a reply and shows you are thinking about delivery, not just about winning.

Weak openings, rewritten

The left column is how most letters open. The right column does the same job in the same space while saying something only you could say.

What to keep and what to cut

What it does

  • The client's problem, stated in the first sentence
  • One relevant project with a concrete outcome
  • A short, specific note on how you would begin
  • One question that helps you scope the job
  • Plain sentences a busy person can skim

What it does not do

  • Greetings and pleasantries before any content
  • Your full work history, education, or availability
  • Claims you cannot evidence, such as being the best or the perfect fit
  • A list of every technology you have ever touched
  • Anything the client can already see on your profile

How long should an Upwork cover letter be?

There is no single correct length, and anyone quoting one number is guessing. Match the letter to the brief: a two line job post does not deserve four paragraphs, and a detailed technical spec deserves more than three sentences. A useful rule is that your letter should not run longer than the brief it answers.

  • Short or vague brief, small budget: roughly 100 to 150 words, mostly the problem and one question.
  • Normal brief with clear scope: roughly 150 to 250 words, using all four moves above.
  • Detailed spec or larger project: up to about 350 words, where the extra space goes to approach, not to credentials.
  • Whatever the length, the first two lines carry most of the weight, because they are what gets skimmed first.

Generating one from your own work

The structure above is the hard part, and it is reusable. What changes per job is which problem to name and which project to cite, which is the work ProposalLift automates: it reads the job post, picks the portfolio project closest to it, and drafts in the persona you pitch as, using hooks and templates you saved. You edit and submit it yourself, every time.

  • Drafts are built from your own projects and phrasing, not from a generic template.
  • The Chrome extension drafts on Upwork's apply page and answers the screening questions.
  • It never submits a proposal and never spends your Connects.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cover letter the same as the proposal on Upwork?

Nearly. Your proposal is the whole submission: the cover letter, your rate, and answers to any screening questions. The cover letter is the written part, and it is what this page is about. The tool that drafts it is the Upwork proposal generator.

How long should an Upwork cover letter be?

It depends on the brief. Roughly 100 to 150 words for a short post, 150 to 250 for a normal one, and up to about 350 for a detailed spec. A letter longer than the job post it answers is usually too long. Anyone quoting one universal number is guessing.

Should I use a cover letter template?

Use a template for the structure and never for the sentences. The four moves above work across every niche, but a client recognizes reused phrasing immediately. Keep the skeleton and rewrite the rest for each job.

Can I write Upwork cover letters with AI?

Yes, and it works best when the AI has your context rather than a blank prompt. Read Upwork's policy on automation, note the difference between drafting help you review and software that submits for you, and remember the letter goes out under your name.
